'flac' is a lossless audio file format. 'flac' files roughly take up half the space of an uncompressed audio file, but retain the full sound quality of the uncompressed file. Therefore, 'flac' files will always have better sound quality than corresponding mp3 files, at the expense of larger file sizes.
